If you go to the CSS section of your layout editing page and put: {-webkit-filter: grayscale(100%);}
after: .avatar in the code everyone will be grey :D
[If you want the colour-with-hover thing I've got going on here the code is a little lengthier (I can send it to you if you'd prefer that effect) but the above should work if you want to grayscale the commenter's avatars.]
